Obagi Blue Peel

Unlike alpha hydroxy and other superficial peels, the Blue Peel has the capability to penetrate to
the immediate reticular dermis. The depth of the peel is controlled by the number of coats applied, generally from 1 to 4. It can be performed on any skin type and is also suitable for use on the neck, chest, hands, arms and elsewhere. No patch testing is required prior to the peel. The blue base helps ensure even application. It also slows down the penetration of the TCA into the skin, making the peel proceed more slowly. This results in less irritation, a shorter interval of burning sensation, and greater control over TCA penetration and depth reached. It is effective in treating many skin conditions (see table).

There are 3 stages of healing:
-shorter times apply to lighter peels, longer times to deeper peels

Stage Comments Initial Healing 3-10 days:
Blue color gradually washes away Mild swelling is possible in first 1-3 days Skin will develop into a tight mask. Wrinkles and pigment will look more pronounced. Skin will darken before it begins to peel. Skin will start to peel off in 1 to 3 days

Recovery Stage 2 to 6 weeks:
The skin may appear normal but is still healing and improving. Redness or pigment changes may still be present. Acne might flare but all symptoms should disappear following the
return to using the Obagi NuDerm system.

Final Stage 6 to 8 weeks:
Skin continues to improve week to week. The final result of the peel can be evaluated at approximately 8 weeks post peel.

You should not have a chemical peel if you,

Are pregnant
Have used Acutane in the past 6 months
Have had chemotherapy or radiation treatments for cancer in the past year
Are prone to excessive scarring (keloids)
Have facial melanoma skin cancer
