How does a Chemical Peel work and what conditions does it
treat ?
Chemical peels utilize a topical solution to remove the
damaged outer layers of skin. They are helpful for those
individuals with facial blemishes (acne), wrinkles and uneven
skin pigmentation. At the cellular level, these acids work by
dissolving the glycoprotein adhesive that bonds keratinocytes
and corneocytes (dead skin cells). This “loosening” of the
stratum corneum encourages faster cell turnover (renewal) and
helps stimulate collagen and elastin production. In general,
they
- Provide smoother, brighter looking skin
- Improve areas of acne, dryness, uneven pigmentation
- Lessen the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
What is the difference between various types of Chemical peels
?
There are many different formulations and strengths of peels.
Superficial peels address only the top layers of skin and can
be performed at any spa or salon by a licensed esthetician.
Higher strength peels penetrate deeper and require nurse
and/or physician oversight- but results and skin improvement
will be more dramatic than with a light, ‘skin refreshing’
peel.
Peels may be buffered or unbuffered- a 50% unbuffered peel is
stronger than a 70% buffered peel.
At Renew, we perform prescription grade peels.
Alpha - hydroxyl acids (AHAs) - glycolic, lactic, tartaric and
various citric acids
Lactic acid – the natural AHA constituent of human skin. Acts
as a moisturizer, exfoliant, skin lightener, pH regulator and
antimicrobial agent. Tends to produce less swelling and
redness compared with other acids.
Glycolic Acid – derived from plant sugars, or can be
synthetically produced. Accelerates skin exfoliation to
eliminate dead cell accumulation and stimulate new cell
growth.
Salicylic acid (a beta hydroxyl acid)- a lipid-soluble organic
acid– has the ability to dissolve into the sebum-filled
follicles of acne-prone patients. Its anti-inflammatory
properties make it beneficial to all acne patients but
especially to those with skin prone to hyperpigmentation. It
also exfoliates skin and can improve skin texture and color.
Jessner’s solution – a blended peel– a combination of the AHA
lactic acid, the BHA salicylic acid and the keratinolytic
agent Resorcinol in an alcohol base.
TCA - Trichloroacetic Acid- varying in strength most commonly
15% to 30%
The Obagi Blue Peel – can be used on the neck, chest, hands and
arms in addition to the face. This is a form of TCA peel
characterized by it’s blue base which acts to even out the TCA
absorption for more even peeling. It is the deepest peel we
perform at Renew and penetrates all the way to the mid
reticular dermis for impressive results. Skin preparation is
required and down time is about a week.
Phenol peels– these are more aggressive peels and often
performed in a plastic surgeons office. Risks (such as
scarring or uneven skin pigmentation) are higher and “down
time” more significant. For example, with a phenol peel,
complete healing can take several months!
How long does it take? Does it hurt?
This is a 30 to 60 minute service depending on the type of
peel performed and what post peel skin treatment is needed.
For most peels there is a sensation of warmth and mild
stinging. This is more intense for deeper peels such as the
Obagi Blue Peel. A fan is used to minimize the sensation. By
the time you leave the MediSpa after the procedure these
sensations are generally gone entirely.
What can I expect after treatment?
A sensation of warmth is temporarily present. This is
generally gone within 30 minutes. A vaiable degree of redness
will be present, from almost unnoticeable to a rosy red flush.
Pure mineral makeup powder can be applied after most peels to
minimize the appearance of redness.
What are advantages / disadvantages of Chemical Peel vs.
Microdermabrasion?
Chemical peels have the potential, depending on the strength
of the peel, to achieve a deeper exfoliation and therefore
more dramatic result. However, there may be some down time
with a Chemical peel during which there is redness, dryness
and/or flaking. Downtime after a Microdermabrasion is
essentially zero. It may be necessary to prepare the skin for
a Chemical peel series with the use of topical products for a
week or more in order to achieve the best results and ensure a
safer peel. Microdermabrasion requires no particular skin
preparation.
Are they safe?
Complications of chemical peels are uncommon but include
blistering, crusting, skin discoloration, and failure to
achieve desired result. Deeper aggressive peels performed
under anesthesia, such as the Phenol peel, carry additional
risk of infection or scarring. We do not perform Phenol peels
at Renew.
Who should not have a Chemical Peel?
If there is an active skin infection in the area to be
treated, or if you are expecting to have unusually higher
level of sun exposure (vacation or other trip) the treatment
will need to be postponed.
Persons with a history of very sensitive skin should consider
having a patch test prior to a full peel, in order to gauge
the skin response and expected recovery from the procedure.
The condition of your skin and your past peel experience will
determine what type and strength of peel is recommended at any
given session. You should not have a chemical peel if you
- Are pregnant
- Have used Acutane in the past 6 months
- Have had chemotherapy or radiation treatments for cancer in
the past year
- Are prone to excessive scarring (keloids)
- Have facial melanoma skin cancer

During your initial consultation, Dr. Hatzos can provide you
with an estimate of the amount of time needed to address the
number and type of veins of concern to you. At the start of a
treatment session, you are then asked to prioritize treatment
regions- those which bother you the most will be addressed
first. As many as possible will be treated in the amount of time
you have requested. Session times noted reflect only the amount
of time the laser is in use. Time allotted for topical numbing
agent to take effect is not charged for.
Pre and post peel skin conditioning kits or individual products
as needed are available for purchase. |
