Medical Microdermabrasion
|
|
| |
Microdermabrasion, developed in Italy in 1985, is an increasingly popular noninvasive procedure used
for skin rejuvenation and the treatment of acne. It utilizes the abrasive qualities of aluminum oxide
crystals and/or diamond dust impregnanted tips along with vacuum suction to gently remove dead skin
cells from the body surface (the stratum corneum). The deep exfoliation achieved by
medical-grade
machines results in |

|
|
| |
- Improved skin texture, smaller pores, diminished
appearance of dark spots and fine lines smoother,
healthier looking skin
- Improved penetration of topically applied skin care
products, leading to improved results
- Fewer acne breakouts (due to removal of pore
obstruction)
A series of treatments (3 to 5) spaced 1 to 2 weeks apart
results in changes seen in deeper layers of skin (the
dermis) which include
- Thicker, more tightly packed and more organized collagen
fibers, as well as increased number of fibers and
fibroblasts (the cells that make collagen fibers)
- More hydrated skin

What about topical creams and home kits?
Home system manufacturers claim that several home treatments will equal one professional treatment.
In reality, the results even with a series of home treatments will not be as good and will likely only affect
the most superficial layers. The same may be said for cheaper, non-medical grade machines used in
some salons.
Aluminum Oxide vs. Diamond Tip
We use a medical grade machine -(the Derma Genesis M2- see the website
www.genesisbiosystems.com for more information) - the most powerful and clinically effective machine
available. It allows us the option to use either crystal or crystal free (diamond dust tip) methods. Often,
we use a combination of both for a treatment. Although crystals are more messy, their irregular shape
makes them a more effective abrader for some areas such as thick skin or irregular surfaces. These
crystals are non toxic, non-carcinogenic. |

Who should not get microdermabrasion?
-Active skin infections impetigo, herpes cold sores, warts in the treatment area
-Use of Accutane within the past 6 months
-Untreated Rosacea
-Recently waxed or sunburned skin in the proposed treatment area.
If you have a history of cold sores, you can be pre-treated to avoid an outbreak which could theoretically
be triggered by the procedure (though this is uncommon in our experience). |

How many treatments will I need?
Although improvement in skin appearance is evident even with 1 treatment, a series of 3 to 5 is
recommended. Each treatment removes approximately 30% of the dead skin cell layer and it is with
successive treatments that changes in the deeper skin cell layers are noted. After your initial series, the
beneficial effects can be maintained through the use of topical exfoliants such as Obagi Exfoderm, Exfoderm
Forte or Vitamin C Exfoliating day lotion, Glymed Physician Elite Rx gentle face wash (contains
several glycolic acids) or AHA accelerator, and Retin A.
After your series, a maintenance treatment every 2 to 3 months is suggested. |
