Laser Hair Removal

How does it work?

The term laser is an acronym which stands for Light Amplification by the Stimulated Emission
of Radiation. A highly concentrated beam of light (energy) pulsates for a fraction of a second,
targeting the pigment (melanin) in the hair in an effort to destroy the hair follicle. The heat
buildup that occurs caused by the absorption of energy by the hair itself is capable of creating
follicular damage. This prevents future hair production from that follicle. Multiple follicles are
destroyed at once with the result that regrowth is significantly reduced. There are very few
adverse effects in removing hair with the laser. The procedure is individualized and based on
the color of the skin and the texture and color of the hair. The light wavelengths used are not in a spectrum that promotes skin damage or skin cancers. The laser affects only those hairs that
are in the growth phase at the time of treatment. This is why a series of treatments is neces-
sary, to catch hairs that enter the growth phase at different times. Laser Hair removal is not effective for gray, white or extremely light hair.

Does it Hurt?
Most areas treated do not require any topical numbing agents, as the Palomar Laser has a
crystal cooled tip. However, topical creams are always available and may be used if you wish.
They require 30 minutes of contact with the skin to be effective so you will be asked to come
early to your appointment and to notify us ahead of time if you desire this so we can block the
schedule accordingly. Immediately after the treatment there may be a slight sense of warmth
and a faint redness of the treated area. These resolve very quickly and are not painful. Most
clients who have experienced waxing or electrolysis have noted that Laser hair removal with
the Palomar machine, even without the use of topical numbing cream, is actually LESS painful
than these other hair removal procedures.

How long does it take?
The number of treatments needed with a Palomar Laser varies from 3 to 5. These are gener-
ally scheduled from 4 to 6 weeks apart. You can shave as often as you need to between treat-
ments but you must not pluck or wax the region being treated. We sell packages of 3 treat-
ments. Should you require a 4th or a 5th treatment, you will be able to purchase these at the
same per treatment price as your original package, indefinitely. For example, if your package is 3 treatments for $300, then any subsequent full treatment of the same area would be $100 (or
less) per session. Treatment time for Full Legs, Full Back or Full Chest is approximately 60
minutes. All other areas are generally 30 minutes with the exception of the face which is often
only 5 to 15 minutes.

Is it permanent?
Laser Hair Removal is best described as Permanent Hair Reduction. At some point after your
initial series it is likely that you will need a touch up appointment, perhaps a few times a year.
This is true of all lasers. We cannot prevent your body from making new hair follicles slowly,
over extended periods of time. Touch up appointments at Renew are brief and inexpensive,
priced according to the amount of time it takes to perform the treatment.

  Pre-Treatment Instructions– Laser Hair Removal

  • Refrain from waxing/tweezing/plucking, sugaring, electrolysis for at least 2 to 4 weeks before treatment because hair follicles that do not have hair shafts attached to absorb the laser energy will not be effectively treated. You may shave the area as often as needed.

  • Shave or closely clip the area to be treated 4-24 hrs before treatment. This allows you to shape the exact area you want treated and eliminates excess hair on the surface which would absorb and effectively .waste. some of the laser energy delivered (reducing the amount that reaches the hair root where it is really needed).

  • Minimize sun exposure or tanning (including self tanner or products containing self tanner) on the area to be treated for 4 weeks prior to treatment. Otherwise, we will not be able to use the maximum energy settings.

  • Always use sun block containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide on treated areas during the course of treatment. We carry Obagi sunscreen at the Spa which is particularly good for facial application as it is non-greasy and absorbs quickly.

  • Discontinue use of Retin-A or other exfoliating products 2 weeks prior to treatment.♦ If you have a history of herpes (cold sores) in the area to be treated, notify Dr. Hatzos so that you can be pre-treated to avoid an outbreak

  • Topical anesthetics are generally not needed for this procedure. If you wish you
can pre-treat with Tylenol. If you desire the use of topical numbing
agents, notify us when you schedule your appointments so that
    we can book accordingly.

Post Treatment Expectations. Laser Hair Removal

  • A mild sunburn-like sensation is expected and usually lasts less than 1 hour (rarely up to 72 hrs). Mild swelling usually resolves quickly as well. A non steroidal such as ibuprofen or naproxen (Motrin, Aleve) or Tylenol can be used but is rarely needed. Feel free to apply cold gel packs as well.
  • Bathe or shower as usual. Avoid aggressive scrubbing including loofah sponges. Appearance of hair growth/stubble may continue post-treatment, usually for no more than 2-3 weeks. This is not necessarily new hair growth. Treated hairs require time to be shed from the skin. At the 2 to 3 week point you should notice less regrowth in the region that was treated.
  • Follow up treatments are usually at 4 to 6 week intervals.
  • Age, ethnicity, weight, hormones, diet, prescription medication, and metabolism all affect how your hair grows and responds to laser hair removal.
  • Use sun block and avoid shaving, swimming, or hot tub/Jacuzzi use while the area is irritated. Shaving or depilatory creams (ex:Nair) are OK between sessions. Remember not to tweeze/pluck/wax/sugar, etc. For the face, mineral makeup is best. We carry the full line of Jane Iredale mineral makeup.
